Severe Back Pain Today

Sometime last night, I was woken up by pain in my right SI joint (sacroiliac joint). The pain was intense enough to wake me up, something that doesn’t happen often, but was something I’m familiar with. It was the pain that comes with the joint locking up. Sadly, locked SI joints are common, especially in the right. Once I identified pain, I stretched in an attempt to resolve it, and went back to sleep.

Now, I didn’t sleep well, mind you. While I’m used to the pain, it is still excruciating. The only reason I can sleep through it is because I can turn off the panic associated with it due to it being “normal.” I still slept horribly because I would roll into a position that caused it to stab me and it would wake me back up. Not fun. But I slept.

When I woke up, I was exhausted and still in pain. There isn’t a lot I can really do for a locked SI joint on my own: some stretches, some ball work, rest. I need Dan for one manipulation we were taught to do, and I need a physical therapist for the rest. Nothing was working and Dan was at work. Aleve and heating pads just take the edge off.

Then, a storm warning with the possibility of “large hail” was issued. NOT MY BABY! (It was parked in the driveway.) So I forced myself down into the garage and managed to move stuff enough to get it most of the way into the garage. We do have hail protection, but I don’t want to have to use it! At least this way it’ll only get hit on the back and only if it’s windy.

Then I staggered upstairs and realized I needed to deal with my porch things. I had gotten a new cover for the BBQ, so I quickly threw that on, and then I had to save my potted flowers. My flowers were relatively easy to rescue, but heavy, which hurt my shoulder slightly. The reach also strained my back more.

By the time I got inside, I was shaking like a cold chihuahua because I’d forgotten to eat. Ugh! So I drank my lunchtime Ensure and finally lay down on the couch with a heating pad on my back.

It never hailed.

The pain spread across my back from my right SI joint to my entire low back. I cannot sit properly. I couldn’t relax on the toilet even (probably comical). I’ve had to spend all day lying down in different positions. I’ve even needed two doses of Tramadol and I’ve been using heating pads (cold hurts my fibro).

When I changed into my pajamas, I noticed the waistband was really hurting the longer I had them on. I made Dan inspect my back. It’s bruised and a little swollen over my left SI joint. No idea why that one is swollen. I’m still in a lot of pain. I’m thinking I might risk the surface nerve pain to get the swelling down with an ice pack.

Either way, I don’t think I’m sleeping well tonight.
