I promise I’ll write some less serious stuff soon! Right now, I’m trying to catch up everyone on my health stuff so ya’ll aren’t lost later when I reference things. 🙂 Hang in there and I promise there will be some general updates soon that are less depressing!
Melodramatic title? Probably. But this ear thing has been crazy, so it feels appropriate right now.
This ear saga started just before my birthday, March 2015… but of course, we didn’t realize that it would turn into a saga. I woke up March 10th with the telltale pain in my ear signaling an outer ear infection (commonly referred to as swimmer’s ear), so I went to urgent care as soon as I got dressed. This was my 6th or 7th ear infection since moving to Colorado, so I knew for sure it was an infection. I just needed to make sure I didn’t have an internal one as well, and get a prescription for antibiotic drops. The urgent care doc, seeing that I’d just been in the previous May for another ear infection, referred me to an ENT (ear nose throat doc) to find out why I keep getting ear infections…
I wish my fibro pain would go away and stay away… permanently. For some reason, the last two days have shown an increase in the fibro pain that is in my wrists and ankles. I also think my pain level has increased all over slightly. I must have overdone it at Pilates on Monday (and then leading Dan through a stretching routine that evening). Dumb triggers.
(To learn who I am as a person, please visit the About Me section. For summaries of my other chronic conditions, please see the “My Chronic Illnesses” series. There are three parts: one, two, three.)
So, POTS… yeah, it pretty much sucks. This one is my newest chronic invisible illness, and has been the most debilitating by far. Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is a complicated beast. POTS is a type of dysautonomia, which is a malfunction of the autonomic nervous system (the part of your nervous system that controls everything involuntary, like blinking, breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, etc). As you can imagine, the autonomic nervous system malfunctioning is not a good thing. Now, let’s explain the rest of this POTS thing the best that I can.
If you’re just starting to read my blog, please read both the About Me section and the first part of this summary.
So, in the first part I covered the illnesses that I was diagnosed with (or knowingly suffered from) before I turned 18. After graduating high school in California, I moved to Colorado to begin college (August 2008). It didn’t take long for my health to get all out of whack. I ended up having ovarian cyst issues in March 2009, which ultimately ended with surgery in June 2009 to remove a large and stubborn cyst. Thankfully, the cyst problem doesn’t appear to be chronic. However, I ended up getting diagnosed with several other invisible illnesses, which are explained below in rough order of diagnosis. From oldest to most recent, this post will cover: migraines, plantar fasciitis, and fibromyalgia.Â
I suffer from several invisible, chronic illnesses: asthma, allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, most likely misophonia, insomnia, migraines, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, temporal mandibular joint dysfunction, eosinophilic esophagitis, lactose intolerance/sensitivity, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The purpose of this post series is to explain these conditions further and when I was diagnosed. I, unfortunately, have so many conditions that this would be far too long for a single post, so I’ll be talking about them in the rough order of diagnosis (or onset if it was obvious enough to determine the exact start). If you want to know more about me as a person, please read my About Me section.
